Sweet Baby Quilts & Tutorial (Part 2)

It's time for another baby quilt! Last month, I shared an easy design to stitch up an adorable small quilt. Today I'm sharing another option, this time using the Sweet Baby Boy FQ bundle.

Sweet Baby Boy FQ Bundle

Quick baby quilt patterns are a great resource - they help you sew and gift a quilt when a baby is born. They're great for toddlers too - the smaller size means that little ones can lay on the quilt or carry it around. All you need is a bundle of fat quarters to get started. A simple pattern allows the prints to shine! For this quilt, I used rectangles instead of squares, and offset the rows to enhance the design. Take a look:

You'll Need:
8-10 assorted fat quarters (includes binding)

1-1/8 yards of backing fabric

38" x 42" piece of batting

Cutting:
From the fat quarters, cut a total of:
(45) 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces
(6) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces
(8) 2-1/4" x 21" binding strips

Refer to the cutting sample below: first cut the binding strip, then cut (2) 4-1/2" x 21" strips to subcut, and then cut (1) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" piece rom the remainder.

Tip: Layer 2-3 fat quarters for efficient cutting.

Fussy cutting option:

This fun print from the Sweet Baby Boy collection has bunnies that are spaced out. I decided to fussy cut them so that the bunnies would be centered in my 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces. To do this, position a ruler on top and center the image you want to fussy cut. Trim on two sides, and then rotate, align the ruler, and trim on the remaining two sides.

Lay out:

Arrange the pieces into (6) rows.
Rows 1, 3 and 5 should each have (8) 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces.

Rows 2, 4 and 6 should each have (7) 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces and then (1) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" piece at each end.

Sew the pieces into rows.

Assembly & Finishing:

Because of the offset layout, the seams in each row don't align. To make sure your rows are stitched together accurately, mark the center of Rows 2, 4 and 6 with a pin. Align the pinned center mark in Row 2 with the seam in Row 1 and pin the two rows together, then stitch. Continue joining rows in the same way until the quilt top is assembled.

Layer the quilt top with batting and backing and baste layers together. Quilt as desired and use the (8) 2-1/4" x 21" strips to bind.
