Thread Mastery
Welcome to the thread guide at Sit n' Sew Fabrics, your go-to resource for mastering the art of thread selection! We understand that choosing the right thread and in the correct amount can be a bit like navigating a labyrinth, so we've created this guide to shed light on the differences between the different types of thread and the different sizes that they come.
CONES vs. SPOOLS
Cones are the thread giants, holding approximately 3,001 to 5,500 yards of thread. Ideal for prolific sewers and long projects, these powerhouses ensure you have a continuous supply, reducing the need for frequent thread changes. Each cone of thread at 5,500 yards will allow for approximately 1,000,000 stitches.
When to Choose Cones:
- Large Projects: Quilts, curtains, and extensive fabric lengths.
- Production Runs: High-volume sewing or embroidery businesses.
- Reduced Downtime: Minimize interruptions with fewer thread changes.
Spools, the compact companions, hold approximately 110 to 3,000 yards of thread. Perfect for smaller projects, embroidery, or when you need a variety of colors without committing to a massive cone. Each spool of 1,100 yards will allow for approximately 200,000 stitches.
When to Choose Spools:
- Versatility: Ideal for diverse color options without the commitment.
- Embroidery Projects: Smaller-scale designs and intricate details.
- Space Considerations: Perfect for a home sewing space with limited storage.
Types of Thread
Polyneon: Madeira's 100% polyester machine embroidery thread, Polyneon is constructed of a specially developed raw material which eliminates looping, puckering and virtually all thread breaks. Suitable for almost any embroidered application, Polyneon's unique formula makes this thread extremely durable and smooth running. Vibrant colors are glossy, shiny, as well as resistant to chlorine bleach, making Polyneon the ideal thread for embroidering on uniforms, safety garments and commercial linens.
Classic Rayon: Rayon machine embroidery thread is known worldwide for its high tensile strength and excellent glossy luster. Made from 100% viscose rayon, is perfectly suited for embroidery on high-speed commercial embroidery machines. Rayon thread maintains its soft "hand" even when the stitch count is high.
Super Twist: This is a twisted metallic thread that brings designs to life with sparkle. The triple applied twisting process of this thread gives designs dimension and a unique textured effect. The strong nylon core and genuine metallic base enhance both its sewability and festive, shimmering appearance on many applications. The Opal and Crystal colors are denim-wash resistant. It is ideal for bringing embroidery to life with flashes of sparkle, festoon work, ornamental seams and many other special decorative applications. It is designed to run on high speed embroidery machines.
Cotona: Ideal for fine machine quilting work, as well as for freehand quilting incorporating a large amount of double quilting lines (such as for feather patterns or dense backgrounds) - the quilting line stays thin, and the fabric soft. Stitching remains flat when doing patchwork. Also perfect for delicate machine applique stitches, including straight stitch, small zigzag stitch, blind hem stitch and buttonhole stitch. Ideal for fine, delicate embroidery and lace, for perfect embroidery work. Tip: Use the Cotona No. 50 as bobbin thread too for a perfect color match.
AeroQuilt: Especially tear-resistant quilting thread for long-arm quilting machines. Consists of a hard-wearing polyester core spun thread with a special finish that makes it as soft as cotton. Outstanding smoothness and perfect sliding properties. Also ideally suited for use with sewing and overlock machines.
AeroLock: The most beautiful patterns and exclusive fabrics are wasted if the seams disintegrate after a few washes. With MADEIRA’s new Aerolock No.125 premium yarn, you obtain neat and long lasting overlock seams. Aerolock No.125 is a top quality core spun thread and only this construction guarantees longevity even if the seam is frequently washed and heavily strained. Aerolock is sturdy and works perfectly on all sewing, overlock and coverlock machines.
Aerofil: Madeira manufactures Aerofil to the highest quality and environmental standards. It is Oekotex certified. The thread is extremely strong and even, and it works excellently on all Sewing, Overlock and Coverlock machines. As well as being available in single spools, Aerofil can also be purchased in Madeira’s unique thread assortments such as our very popular Treasure Chest for your sewing room or our portable travel box for use when you are on the move.
