Valentine's Project - Quilted Postcards
Quilted Valentine Postcards
Quick, easy, and SEW fun — these appliqued heart postcards are the sweetest little “quilted love note” you’ll send all year.
Send some love this Valentine's Day with handmade quilted postcards! I love making these - with appliqued hearts, they're quick and easy, and it's so fun to actually mail small pieces of quilted love to my favorite people! To watch a video showing how to make these postcards, click here.
Grab your favorite red/pink/purple fat quarter bundle and let's get sewing! I used this bundle of solids; check out all of the Sit 'n Sew FQ bundles here.

You'll Need
A variety of fat quarters in valentine colors
7" x 9" piece of solid white
7" x 9" piece of solid white
6-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of fusible fleece or batting
6-1/2" x 8-1/2" piece of stabilizer (optional)
Fusible web
Coordinating thread
Let's get started!
First, download the pdf with the templates and print it out.
Step 1
Trace a variety of sizes and types of hearts onto the paper side of fusible web. Leave 1/2" in between your traced hearts. Cut out each heart about 1/4" past the drawn lines.
Step 2
Choose a background color (mine is the light pink on the left) and cut (1) 7" x 9" rectangle. Then decide which heart shapes to fuse to which fabrics.
Step 3
Fuse each heart to your chosen fabric color. If you are using a print fabric, make sure to fuse to the wrong side of the fabric. With solids, either side is fine.
Step 4
Cut out each heart. Notice that a few of the hearts are meant to be outlined shapes.
Tip: For fun, you can cut out some hearts using pinking shears.
Step 5
Play around with positioning of the hearts until you're happy with how your fabric postcard looks. Make sure to keep heart shapes 1/2" from the edges to account for trimming and edge stitching.
Step 6 When you're happy with the placement, use an iron to fuse the hearts in place.
Step 7 Fuse or baste the piece of fusible fleece of batting to the wrong side of your heart postcard. Do not add a backing at this point.
Step 8 Choose a thread color for quilting. I picked these two variegated threads to try - Madeira Cotona Sorbet (Col. 517) and Petunia (Col. 513).
