Pumpkin Mini Quilt

Pumpkin Mini Quilt

It's pumpkin season! Today we're using fabrics from the Halloween Grab Bag to make a Pumpkin Mini Quilt. And then just for fun...(scroll down to the bottom)...print out our pdf to add jack o'lantern faces to your pumpkin!
Step 1: Cutting
From orange scraps:
(4) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces
From white scraps:
(4) 2" squares
(2) 2-1/2" x 3-3/4" pieces
(1) 1-1/2" x 2" piece
From black scraps:
(1) 1-1/2" x 2" piece

Step 2: Piece your pumpkin
Stitch together the (4) 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" orange pieces. Note that I used two each of two different orange prints to give my pumpkin a little contrast and added interest.  If you want to get really fancy, you could piece orange scraps in any combination you choose (all 2-1/2" squares, for example) to create a piece that measures 8-1/2" wide x 6-1/2" tall.

Step 3: Add quick corners to "shape" your pumpkin
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (4) 2" squares. Place a marked square right sides together in each corner of the pumpkin from step 2. stitch on the drawn lines, trim seam allowances to 1/4", and press corners open.

Step 4: Create and add the stem row
Sew together (1) each 1-1/2" x 2" black and white pieces along the long edge. Sew 2-1/2" x 3-3/4" white pieces to both sides to create the stem row.
Sew the stem row to the pumpkin from step 3 to complete the pumpkin block. The block should measure 8-1/2" square.

Step 5: Finish the Mini Quilt
Layer a 9-1/2" square backing piece right side down, a 9-1/2" square batting piece, and the pumpkin block right side up. Baste the layers together and quilt (I quilted straight lines using orange thread). Trim the backing and batting even with the quilt top and use (1) 2-1/4" x WOF strip to bind the mini quilt.
That's it! You're done and ready for fall.

Ready to "carve" that jack o'lantern face? Download the faces pdf here and print it out. Trace the face features you want onto the paper side of fusible web. Fuse onto the wrong side of black fabric. Cut out on the trace line, remove paper, and fuse into place on your pumpkin. Use a decorative stitch to secure shapes in place. That's it!
