Let's take a look at our Halloween Grab Bag and some ideas for using these scraps.
Idea 1: Log Cabin Block
For Round 1, cut:
(1) 3-1/2" center square
(1) 2" x 3-1/2" piece
(2) 2" x 5" pieces
(1) 2" x 6-1/2" piece
Sew the pieces around the square in a clockwise manner.
For Round 2, cut:
(1) 2" x 6-1/2" piece
(2) 2" x 8" pieces
(1) 2" x 9-1/2" piece
Sew the pieces around the square in a clockwise manner.
Layer the block with backing and batting, quilt, and then bind to create a mug rug. Add a layer of insulated batting to the quilt sandwich to make a pot holder. Continue adding another row or two of 2"-wide logs to make a larger block and finish as a throw pillow.
Idea 2: Rail Fence Block
For each block, cut (3) assorted 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" pieces. Sew together along long sides to make one rail fence block.
Make assorted 6-1/2" square blocks using the various scrap fabrics.
Lay out six blocks to make a placemat - sew together, layer with backing and batting, quilt and bind.
Lay out additional blocks to make a table runner, wall hanging, or even a quilt!Idea 3: Half-Square Triangles
Cut (2) 4" squares (or size of choice). Pair right sides together and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the top square. Stitch 1/4" on both sides of the drawn line, cut open on the line, and press both units open. Square up to 3-1/2".
Continue cutting and pairing squares to make a variety of half-square triangles.
Lay them out in a zig zag arrangement. (Download the complete pattern for this Zig Zag Mini with the purchase of a Halloween Grab Bag.)
