New Year, New Sewing Room

It's the end of the year, and everyone is talking resolutions. Exercise more, eat less dessert, read more books... those are all worthwhile resolutions, but today we're going to focus on sewing-related resolutions.

One of my resolutions is always to keep my studio neater and more accessible so I can spend less time hunting for the supplies I need and more time sewing. I struggle with putting away the leftovers from one project before jumping into the next.

What about you? What if we gave you a blueprint to start off the new year with organized and efficient sewing space? Sounds great, right?!?!

My resolution this year is to get my sewing studio into a neat and organized space. (And then to keep it that way!)

So I put together 5 steps to tackle all the problem areas in a typical sewing room, complete with suggestions on how to handle these areas.

First...probably the biggest challenge in any sewing room - fabric. We all keep buying more, and creating more scraps when we sew, and we need a way to handle it.

Second, every sewer or quilter has a collection of patterns - well-loved favorites, new techniques to try, and ones you hang on to just in case you might need it some day. Make those patterns easy to access!

Third, let's talk thread. So many colors, so many types...and I don't know about you, but mine like to unspool and get tangled! Taking time to neaten up your thread and bobbin collection makes a difference.

Fourth is all the "hidden" parts of quilting and sewing - batting, stabilizers, fusible web. These things can be challenging to sort and store, but a pile on the floor is not the answer - labels are!

Fifth, let's talk notions. How many rotary cutters or scissors do you have? Which one(s) do you actually use? Take inventory of what is most useful to you and find convenient homes for those items. Store the rest elsewhere for when you need them.

Often the hardest part of organizing a space is getting started - we hope that this list and our suggestions help you to kick off the new year with a neat and useable sewing area!
